Value chain accountability is a key challenge for AI governance i.e. how should we establish processes and mechanisms by which all actors across AI value chains can be appropriately held to account by other actors and stakeholders. Transparency of information is key to enabling accountability and building trust. Transparency has long been held as a fundamental principle and value to be pursued in AI governance. Policy frameworks like the UNESCO Recommendation and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework recognise the importance of ensuring appropriate information about an AI system is made available to those who interact with it. Article 13 of the EU AI Act provides the requirement of transparency and provision of information for high-risk AI systems. However, we have yet to operationalise the process for information sharing through the value chain.
At this roundtable, we will hear from leaders directly involved in both AI regulation and standards development, and also those implementing of AI assurance. Catriona Gray will present our 2023/24 updated report on AI Governance and Assurance Global Trends. Rob Wortham will also present a recent white paper calling for, and proposing steps towards, standardised information sharing through the AI value chain.
